Class Notes: Notes: Taught by Prof. Shangyang Fang,This class is designed to provide a supportive and constructive environment for experienced poets to develop their craft. Each week, students will be given a prompt to generate a new poem for the workshop. In addition, students are expected to give at least one in-class presentation of the weekly poetry reading assignment. This class will explore a variety of contemporary and canonical poets and their works, examining different styles and techniques to expand their understanding of the possibilities of poetry. Our primary job is descriptive. To identify in what specific ways the works we are looking at demonstrate the presence of poetry. We will discuss the primary modes in which the poem functions, whether lyrical, narrative, rhetorical, or meditative. We ask what are the work’s formal characteristics, lexicon, syntax, tone, and voice. In what ways does it interact with poetic convention and tradition? How to braid a figurative leap through the association of imagery? When is the right moment for a rhetorical exposition? As practicing artists, we are here to dissect and scrutinize, disassemble, and reassemble the very mechanism and craftsmanship of writing., ,Please submit 3-5 poems to English.department@umb.edu; write ’Advanced Poetry submissions’ in your subject line. Professor Fang will notify you if you have been accepted into the course.
